Lost an engine on return which could not be feathered, causing ship to vibrate violently; he decided to land at fighter base; shortly after touching down, two P-38's pulled out in front of him and he immediately brought the ship up and crash-landed in the field beyond the runway, wheels up; all ten crew suffered injury, one seriously.
