1944‑06‑13 134 409 Target: Dreux Airfield
Type: German Air Force (Luftwaffe)
Location: Dreux, France
Airfield Attacked: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) flew three groups to form the 41st A Combat Bombardment Wing, leading three Combat Wings on today's mission. The weather in the target area was CAVU and the primary target, an enemy airfield, was clearly visible. A visual bomb run was made, with good results. Colonel Smith led the mission, and recommended that for such targets, greater effectiveness could be achieved by assigning each group a different aiming point, and to slow down the release of the bombs slightly to spread the damage over a greater area.

1944‑06‑14 135 412 Target: Coulommiers Airfield

Location: Coulommiers, France
Clouds Cover Primary: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) flew as the 41st B Combat Bombardment Wing (41B Wing) and the High Group of the 41st D Combat Bombardment Wing (41D Group) on today's mission. The primary and secondary targets of the 41B Wing were hidden by 10/10 cloud cover, so a target of opportunity (TOO), the airfield at Creil, was bombed by the Lead and High groups: the Low group was forced out of position by sudden maneuvers by the Wing Lead and were unable to follow him on the bomb run to the TOO, resulting in no attack by the Low Group. The High and Low groups returned to England in formation with the Wing ahead of them in the bomber stream. Weather prevented the 41D Group from attacking the primary. After three runs on the primary target, contact with the Lead group was lost, and a decision was made to attempt to find the secondary target. However, weather conditions there were similar, so all bombs were returned to base. Also, because this group had lost contact with its Wing, it returned to base alone.

1944‑06‑19 140 424 Target: NOBALL (V-1 Launch Site)
Type: CROSSBOW (V-Weapons)
Location: Fleury & Crépy, France
Weather Changes Plans: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) put up two group formations for this afternoon's mission to knock out V-Weapon launch sites. There was no wing or division assembly, each group flying independently to its target and back. The 41A group formation target was Fleury, France, where the cloud cover was solid, so the 41A Group leader decided to attack their assigned Gee-H target at Bientques. The 41B group formation target was Crépy, France, but it was also obscured by cloud cover so the 41B group leader decided to attack their assigned Gee-H target at Crepieul.

Berlin Industries Bombed: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) provided most of the aircraft and crews for the 41st A Combat Bombardment Wing for today's mission; the 379th BG provided a squadron for the high group, and crews for four 384th aircraft of the high group. The 41A Wing was fifth of nine Wings in Air Task Force #2. While the target area weather was generally clear, heavy contrails on the bomb run convinced the wing leader to bomb using PFF aiming. Transportation Attacked: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) led the 41st B Combat Bombardment Wing, and also provided the low group, on this afternoon's mission, the second of the day. The target was a marshalling yard east of Lille in the Fives district. The high group of the B wing did not have this problem, and was able to drop the bombs using its own PFF equipment in the group lead aircraft.

Me-109 Factory Targeted: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) provided the high groups for the 41st A and B Combat Bombardment Wings on today's mission. The A group encountered little difficulty completing the mission as briefed, but the story was quite different for the B group. Following assembly, the 41st B CBW leader led the formation through a very heavy cloud layer, causing the formation to deteriorate. Once clear of the clouds, few 384th ships were able to locate any formation. Those who did tacked on to the low B group and bombed the target using PFF. In addition, two of our ships collided in the cloudy conditions, with fatal results.

Myriad Problems: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) provided all three group formations of the 41st C Combat Bombardment Wing for today's mission. The bombardier of the lead group could not pick up the primary target on the first bomb run - and his intercom was out so the pilot's orders went unheard, resulting in the lead group's bombs being dropped on Laon, France, Marshalling Yards. Meanwhile, the high group had similar trouble picking up the primary target, and went around for a second run with the same result, but with heavy flak. The high group leader then selected a last resort target, a bridge in Eu, France, and the group dropped their bombs there. The low group released their bombs on the first bomb run, but apparently aimed them at a nearby railroad bridge in 'Vouël' (Tergnier), France.

V-Weapons Development Targeted: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) flew as the high groups of the 41st A and B Combat Bombardment Wings (41A Group and 41B Group) on today's mission. The 41A Group bombed their assigned target visually, although the wing commander had ordered a PFF attack. Our lead bombardier, Tony Palazzo, worked with the navigator to ensure they knew their position at all times on the bomb run. This teamwork resulted in a precise attack on the assigned aim point. The 41B Group bombed their assigned target visually, although they had to make a second run due to sighting problems on the first run. Slight difficulties resulted in the bomb pattern being rather large, and slightly beyond the target.

Tactical Support Mission: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) provided all three groups of the 41st A Combat Bombardment Wing, the third of 11 wings of Air Task Force #3 on today's mission. The target was an important link in the enemy supply line into the invasion area. The weather cooperated with sufficient visibility to bomb visually, although an air traffic conflict forced the high group to pull out and make a 360° turn before starting their bomb run.

1944‑08‑24 183 568 Target: Synthetic Oil & Chemical Plant
Type: Oil Industry
Location: Merseburg, Germany
Oil Pressure: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) provided all three groups of the 41st C Combat Bombardment Wing on today's mission. The 8th AF continued to decimate the enemy's fuel supply by attacking this giant chemical complex. The C wing was to follow the A and B wings, but over the North Sea, they caught up and passed both, leading them from the enemy coast, for the rest of the mission. This was apparently due to the wings making different adjustments for cloud layers, and perhaps navigation errors. Although the 384th was prepared for a target obscured by clouds and smoke screen, there was sufficient visibility for visual bombing.

1944‑09‑17 195 637 Target: Tank and Gun Concentrations, Tactical
Type: Military
Location: Eindhoven & 's‑Hertogenbosch (den Bosch), The Netherlands
Tactical Support Mission: The 384th Bombardment Group (Heavy) was tasked to provide six squadrons, A thru F, for today's mission against tactical targets in The Netherlands in support of ground troops. These squadrons formed two groups which flew to their target areas. The first group (A, B, and C squadrons) attacked a single assigned target at Eindhoven, the C squadron having to make a second bomb run because the bombardier had the bomb rack selector switch OFF on the first run, so bombs did not release. The other group was assigned targets near 's Hertogenbosch. The D Squadron attacked its assigned target and the E Squadron attacked its own assigned target. The F Squadron did not attack because the Bombardier was unable to pick up the target on the first run: a second bomb run was considered but not attempted because they would not have been able to comply with the bombing deadline of 1130 hrs. All squadrons returned to base independently.

The lead group's target was a factory in Cologne, the High group's was an oil refinery in Monheim (near Cologne) and the low group's was the M.T. Factory of Ford Motor AG in Cologne.
