The two towns of Bricquebec and Rocheville in Normandy decided to build a memorial dedicated to the memory of two brave 384th Bomb Group, 544th Squadron crews who were killed in the crash of their B-17s. Both were knocked out of the sky by deadly flak.
2nd Lt. Herbert Small and his crew were killed on April 27th, 1944. Four photos of their B-17 are located in this collection (Photos 53-56).
1st Lt. James E. Foster and his crew were killed on May 8th, 1944. 2nd Lt. Joseph Uniszkiewicz (original Clayton crew navigator) and T/Sgt. Robert Corpening (the Clayton crew's second bombardier) were trying to complete their tours of duty and so flew with Foster's crew on the May 8th mission. Their names are displayed on the memorial.
