DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS, Oak Leaf Cluster. ALFRED C. NUTTALL. 0-404094, Lieutenant Colonel, Air Corps, United States Army. For extra achievement while serving as Air Commander of a Combat Bombardment Wing of B-17 aircraft on a bombing mission over Germany, 20 June 1944. On this date Colonel Nuttall led his formation to the designated objective despite a heavy barrage of anti-aircraft fire. Upon arrival at the target he unhesitatingly directed his formation on an unusually long bombing run under conditions of extreme hazard. Although his formation sustained considerable damage Colonel Nuttall effected a highly successful run and inflicted great damage upon the vital enemy installations. The consummate skill and exemplary performance of duty exhibited by this officer contributed to the outstanding results attained. The courage, coolness and skill displayed by Colonel Nuttall reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States. Entered military service from Washington.
