1944‑05‑11 | 105 | 351 | Target: Railroad Marshalling Yards Type: Transportation Location: Saarbrücken and Ehrang, Germany |
Railroads Targeted: The 384th Bombardment Group (Heavy) provided two group formations for today's mission. The first group flew as the high group of the 41st A Combat Bombardment Wing (41A Group) to attack Saarbrücken. Clouds obscured the primary target, as well as targets in the Metz, Luxembourg, and Brussels areas, so bombs were held, in keeping with the policy of requiring visual identification and targeting of locations in occupied territory. The second group flew as the high group of the 41st B Combat Bombardment Wing (41B Group) to attack Ehrang. Although thick haze covered the target area, there was sufficient visibility to identify and attack the primary target. |

Weather Causes Confusion: The 38th Bombardment Group (H) led the 41st B Combat Bombardment Wing, and, in addition, provided the Low Group of that wing, on today's mission. Heavy but partially broken clouds over Berlin led to the Lead Group bombing a target of opportunity by visual aiming, while the Low Group bombed the primary target using PFF of another group. |

Tactical Bridges Targeted: The second D-Day mission for the 384th Bombardment Group (H) sent five Squadrons, referred to as I, J, K, L, and M Squadrons in mission records, to knock out important bridges behind the invasion beaches as units of Air Task Force #2. These formations included two PFF-equipped aircraft from the 305th BG. All B-17s on this mission dropped their 500- and 1000-pound bombs on signal from the Lead PFF ships, with unobserved results. |

Railroads Targeted with Mixed Results: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) provided all three groups of the 41st C Combat Bombardment Wing (41C Wing) and the low group of the 41st D Combat Bombardment Wing (41D Group) on today's mission: these Wings were fifth and sixth of the eleven bomb Wings of Air Task Force #1. In support of the invasion force, bombers aimed to disrupt supply lines and materiel in railroad cars. Bombing by the 41C Wing was prevented by clouds over the primary target, so each group independently sought the secondary target, targets of opportunity (TOO), and last resort targets, which were all hidden by localized cloud cover, so attempts to bomb were abandoned and all bombers returned to base with their lethal loads. The 41D Group found their target in the clear: strike photos confirmed direct hits on the railroad bridge. |

Airfield Attacked: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) flew three groups to form the 41st A Combat Bombardment Wing, leading three Combat Wings on today's mission. The weather in the target area was CAVU and the primary target, an enemy airfield, was clearly visible. A visual bomb run was made, with good results. Colonel Smith led the mission, and recommended that for such targets, greater effectiveness could be achieved by assigning each group a different aiming point, and to slow down the release of the bombs slightly to spread the damage over a greater area. |

Clouds Cover Primary: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) flew as the 41st B Combat Bombardment Wing (41B Wing) and the High Group of the 41st D Combat Bombardment Wing (41D Group) on today's mission. The primary and secondary targets of the 41B Wing were hidden by 10/10 cloud cover, so a target of opportunity (TOO), the airfield at Creil, was bombed by the Lead and High groups: the Low group was forced out of position by sudden maneuvers by the Wing Lead and were unable to follow him on the bomb run to the TOO, resulting in no attack by the Low Group. The High and Low groups returned to England in formation with the Wing ahead of them in the bomber stream. Weather prevented the 41D Group from attacking the primary. After three runs on the primary target, contact with the Lead group was lost, and a decision was made to attempt to find the secondary target. However, weather conditions there were similar, so all bombs were returned to base. Also, because this group had lost contact with its Wing, it returned to base alone. |

Weather Limits Bombing: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) put up two group formations for this morning's mission to knock out V-Weapon launch sites. There was no wing or division assembly, each group flying independently to its target and back. The first group (41A Group) was dispatched to Fleury, France, where, even though the cloud cover was solid, the Gee-H bombing system allowed them to drop their bombs. The second group (41B Group) was dispatched to Crépy, France. En route to the target area, the Gee-H equipment became inoperative and efforts by the navigator to repair it were unsuccessful. Therefore, bombs were not dropped by this formation due to the policy that restricts bombing in occupied areas to identifiable military targets. |

The target area weather was generally clear, and bombs were away visually with good results. After bombs away the low group became separated from the wing leaders (probably due to the damage and injuries on the lead ship) and tacked on to a wing with the 401st BG, flying back to the English coast with them. According to one 384th crewmember, the flames and smoke rose above the attack altitude (~27,000') and a crewmember from another group reported the smoke was clearly visible the next day from bombers returning from Berlin. |

The PFF equipment on the lead ship of the high group in the A wing failed prior to the I.P., but that group was able to bomb when the wing leader released his bombs. The high group of the B wing did not have this problem, and was able to drop the bombs using its own PFF equipment in the group lead aircraft. |

Tactical Bridges Attacked: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) provided three group formations to form the entire 41st A Combat Bombardment Wing on today's mission. Three additional 384th aircraft and crews were assigned to fly with with the 41st B CBW to attack a different bridge, but were unable to effect a rendezvous with the wing, and joined a 92nd BG formation to bomb their target. Good bombing weather was found in the target areas, permitting generally good results. |

V-Weapon Depot Attacked: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) flew two group-size formations on today's mission. There was no wing formation specified: the group commanded by Col. Buck was identified as the 41st Combat Wing A Section, and the group commanded by Maj. Stallings was the B section. The target area was somewhat obscured by low clouds, requiring the bombardiers to use Gee-H aiming. The A section dropped on the first bomb run, but trouble with the Gee-H equipment forced the B group to make a second bomb run which concluded successfully. |

Overcoming Weather Diffuculty: For today's second mission, thirteen aircraft of the 384th Bombardment Group (H) flew as a group (but designated as the 41st Combat Wing). The target name given is 'BLANC/PIGNON/FERME', which was located within the commune of Cléty, France. Obscuration of the target and maneuvering difficulties led the group to make three bomb runs, finally dropping on a target of opportunity (TOO) two miles north of the primary target, which the bombardier believed was a V-1 launch site under construction. |

Me-109 Factory Targeted: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) provided the high groups for the 41st A and B Combat Bombardment Wings on today's mission. The A group encountered little difficulty completing the mission as briefed, but the story was quite different for the B group. Following assembly, the 41st B CBW leader led the formation through a very heavy cloud layer, causing the formation to deteriorate. Once clear of the clouds, few 384th ships were able to locate any formation. Those who did tacked on to the low B group and bombed the target using PFF. In addition, two of our ships collided in the cloudy conditions, with fatal results. |

The 41A Group bombed their assigned target visually, although the wing commander had ordered a PFF attack. Our lead bombardier, Tony Palazzo, worked with the navigator to ensure they knew their position at all times on the bomb run. This teamwork resulted in a precise attack on the assigned aim point. The 41B Group bombed their assigned target visually, although they had to make a second run due to sighting problems on the first run. Slight difficulties resulted in the bomb pattern being rather large, and slightly beyond the target. |

Merseburg Slammed Again: The 384th Bombardment Group (H) put up four group formations for today's mission. Three formed the entire 41st B Combat Bombardment Wing, and the remaining one made up the bulk of the high composite group in the 41st D wing. The weather in Merseburg was clear enough for visual aiming, so the primary target was heavily damaged. |
