All over the USA and in the UK, B-17s are maintained in flying condition by volunteers dedicated to preserving the memories of those who served in Flying Fortresses in World War II. "Chuckie" is maintained by Doc Hospers, his wife Chuckie, and several volunteers, some of whom served in WWII - 60 years ago.
Although records are not clear, "Chuckie", a B-17G-70-VE, Ser. No. 44-8543, is very likely a combat veteran of the ETO serving with the 8th or 15th Air Force. Built by Lockheed/Vega, it was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force in October, 1944. After entering service, "Chuckie" was modified to be a Pathfinder B-17 with BTO radar in the ball turret position to allow for IFR bombing.
