SILVER STAR. PETER SENIAWSKY, 12060630, Staff Sergeant, Army Air Forces, United States Army. For gallantry in action, while participating on a bombing mission over Germany, 14 October 1943, as waist gunner of a B-17 airplane. When he encountered extreme difficulties under most hazardous conditions, Sergeant Seniawasky, displaying gallantry and an indomitable will to carry on against great odds, successfully fought his way through the enemy. His gallantry, skill and fighting spirit serve as an inspiration to his fellow fliers and reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States. Entered military service from New York.

  • Ditched and was rescued on 4 October 1943.
  • Reported missing on 14 October 1943 mission. Refer to Escape & Evasion Report 239 (as SENLAWSKY).
  • Promoted to Technical Sergeant on AAF Station 106 Special Orders #168 dated 15 December 1943, apparently after evading capture and returning to Grafton Underwood (via Spain) after having been shot down on 14 October 1943.
  • Placed on duty requiring participation in frequent and regular aerial flights per AAF Station 106 Special Orders #22 dated 1 February 1944.
  • Seniawsky changed his name legally to SCOTT after the war (1951), choosing to Americanize his name for the sake of his daughters (described in 'The Bomber Boys,' by Travis L Ayres).
