| History: | 42-31059 Delivered to Cheyenne, Wyoming for modification on 13 September 1943. Ferried overseas and assigned to the 547th Bombardment Squadron, squadron code SO- , 384th Bombardment Group, station 106, Grafton Underwood, UK on 2 October 1943. The aircraft failed to return from a mission to Schweinfurt, Germany on 14 October 1943. The pilot-Donald Potter Ogilvie and co-pilot-Robert Bruce Kilmer Jr, were captured and became Prisoners of War (2 POW). The navigator-Everett Lynn Childs, engineer/top gunner-Emmett Alexander Hood, ball turret gunner-James William McKeon, waist gunner-Francis Robert Sylvia, waist gunner-William Enoch Martin and tail gunner-Louis Lawrence Ratkiewicz evaded capture (6 EVD). The bombardier-William Hollis Wilson and radio operator-James Raymond Murray were Killed in Action. The aircraft was shot down by enemy aircraft and crashed at Bar-le-Duc, near Soissons, France. Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) #842. Escape and Evasion Report numbers: 1122, 1661, 1951, 2090, 2213, 2413 and 2425. This aircraft was the first B-17G lost in the 384th Bombardment Group. |
