History: | 42-30147 Delivered to Cheyenne, Wyoming for modification on 16 April 1943; Smoky Hill, AAF, Kansas on 25 April 1943; Presque Isle, Maine 15 May 1943. Assigned to the 544th Bombardment Squadron, squadron code SU-O, 384th Bombardment Group, station 106, Grafton Underwood, UK on 28 June 1943. The aircraft failed to return from a mission to Schweinfurt, Germany on 17 August 1943 with pilot-Clayton Wilson, navigator-Fred E. Bloesch, bombardier-Herman D. Stevens, ball turret gunner-George J. Kendall, waist gunner-Eugene W. Penick and waist gunner-Jack F. Hook were captured and became Prisoners of War. The co-pilot-Dewey C. Brown Jr., radio operator-John M. DesRochers, engineer/top turret gunner-Vern P. Long and tail gunner-Ellis H. Klein evaded capture. Shot down by enemy aircraft and crash landed at, Rheims, France.
